Question:
My 11 year old child is taking a flight for the first time by himself as an unaccompanied minor. How do I make sure he doesn’t leave all his belongings behind on the plane?
Coach Jon’s Answer: Travel is a big dislocating factor for folks with ADHD. It takes you out of your usual routine, you have to keep track of a lot of different items, and if you are tired or stressed, it is much easier to lose stuff. This is a parenting situation where making the challenge fun can help. For example, maybe you can come up with three initials: B for Baggage, P for phone, and L for luggage. Then turn it into a chant with hand motions. B - hands up, P - hands to the side, L - hands on your hips. Your teen will probably make fun of you for pretending to be a cheerleader but I bet they won’t forget B-P-L!
