Question:

My 16 year old just got diagnosed with ADHD. How do I figure out if she needs a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a therapist or a coach?

Coach Jon's answer:

It all depends on what issues she is struggling with.

A psychiatrist (or Nurse Practitioner or PA) is needed if your child is going to take medication for her ADHD.

Psychologists and masters-degreed therapists play similar roles with psychologists having a bit more intensive training - they will work primarily on emotional issues with your child and help ease their pain. This may be necessary if your child either has other co-occurring conditions like anxiety or depression or if your child has self-esteem issues due to their ADHD.

Coaches deal with building executive function skills in your child and teaching them to play to their strengths and work around their weaknesses.

You may need more than one of these professionals. All of these professionals, except coaches, must be located in the state you live in because they are licensed in specific states. You may want to consult with the person who diagnosed your child with recommendations for which professionals to work with on an ongoing basis.
