Question:
My son has a meltdown every time I take him shopping wanting me to buy something that is not on my list. Please help!
Coach Lynne's answer
This sounds frustrating and a bit embarrassing. Some kids with ADHD have difficulty regulating their emotions, have poor impulse control and struggle to delay gratification. They may also experience frustration more intensely than other kids. All of these things can contribute to meltdowns in a store. One thing you can do is set clear limits and prepare your child before you go into the store. You could also talk about acceptable things he can do if he feels frustrated or upset like talking a deep breath and talking about it. This is a great area for a child to work on with our coaches. who can help your child to develop improved self-awareness and self-control over the behavior and big feelings.
